Relentless rain. Unceasing darkness. Somewhere in the city, a child cried. Somewhere, a mother hoped for a miracle. But miracles rarely occurred in this city, especially at this time of month. Harvest time. So fathers followed the harvesters, and mothers followed the fathers while most children were carried, regardless of age, as mothers desperately clung to their little ones in these, their last hours together. All heads were bowed, all people resigned to their cruel fate. Why try to resist destiny?
Several humans had tried to resist in the past, but few had escaped, and most were killed.
A pair of eyes watched the gloomy procession from a hiding place in the alley, taking in all detail, comparing the strong and the weak. A chubby two year old toddled close to the hiding place, oblivious to what was going on around her, too young to understand about the reaping of human lives taking place. She babbled some nonsensical baby talk and tugged on her sparse red curls. She was far behind the crowd of human cattle by now, and the being in the alley could hear some frantic mother’s cry “Rosie! Rosaline!” There were several harsh cracks and the calling ceased. The crowd moved on.
A soft voice from the narrow passage called out to the toddler “Rose… Come here Rose.” The baby perked up at the sound of her name and walked unsteadily closer. “That’s it. Come on Rose, my darling Rosie. This way.” Rose followed the voice into the alley and took the hand that was offered out of the shadows, her chubby baby hands wrapping around two slim, pale fingers. She was quickly swept into a pair of warm arms, and immediately giggled and tugged on the stranger’s hair.
A small capsule full of liquid was crushed against the child’s skin, and soon after, she yawned, wriggled into a comfortable position, and went to sleep. “Good girl Rosie” soothed the voice “Sleep now little Rose. Sleep Forgotten Flower…”

Two Groups: Ruling Class, and The Light Within.
Ruling Class; the vampires are mostly overlords to the humans. They effectively ran things even before the appearance of the Angels, only encountering issues with the sun and protection of humans from the Lycanthropes. After the Angels arrived, things became ridiculously easy with weather control and the effective banishing and dehumanization of the majority of Lycanthropes. This was when the Barrier was created: a huge wall surrounding the city to keep the now wild animals out and the wayward human cattle in. The Classed bring hordes of humans into the palace to be held and sacrificed for blood each month. Until it is time for the harvest to begin, humans are allowed to live in designated sections of the village, those being The Fresh: made up of children aged from 2 or so to 19; The Breeders: ranging in age from 19 to 30; The Aged: any human older than 30, sent to properly mature until they are like a fine wine; and The Exotics: humans of any age selected and pumped with drugs, either one or a cocktail. The Exotics are usually a special order.
The Classed, in alliance with the fallen angels, are the main reason the sun never shines anymore, as the angels are skilled weather controllers, they keep it that way, along with the rain. Although Vamps have no big problems with the sun (i.e. they only crisp slightly as opposed to the generic bursting into flames and ending up an ash pile. Think severe sunburn with possible bouts of lesions if exposed to minimal sunlight.), they can live without it, and it keeps the human's spirits down and thoughts of rebellion at bay. It’s not that they delight in human and other being's suffering, at least, not most of them; it’s just the way things are. The strong dominate the weak, and the weak just happen get eaten. It’s the way most were raised, thinking of Humans as a commodity, Angels as equals and rivals, Spectres as barely existing annoyances, and the wild Lycanthropes left living outside the Wall as mere beasts.
The Light Within: There are a few vampires who have rebelled against the Ruling, and a secret organization of these few live underground quite literally, taking in any others who wish to join the small rebellion. They aren't as strong as the other vampires since they're forced to feed only on animals and willing humans. The rebellion consists of Humans, Specters, Under Angels, Vampires, and the occasional Race Hybrid. There isn't much choice for a human as it's either join the rebellion or be eaten.
The Banning of the Books was a decree made when the Classed first came to rule, put into effect under the premise that knowledge is power. The more powerless the cattle, the easier the slaughter. Most beings cannot read unless they are Classed. With the banning of the books came the loss of many important balances. Flowers stopped existing, the sun was barely a memory, but more importantly, the knowledge of control over the elements that was once the human's only source of power gradually faded away until it became nothing more than a barely remembered myth.
A Fight for Freedom was attempted several years after the magic faded away, but it was crushed easily. It seems that without the use of the elements, humans are nothing much more than cannon fodder and cattle.
Those few that escaped the first Fight for Freedom with their lives started the Light with the intention of recovering the knowledge that was lost to them, and to save what cattle they could along the way. Years later, they are little closer to their goal, having increased numbers but little knowledge of the elements.
The Banning of Books Left only The Classed educated while the Decree of Darkness left all creatures free to roam. The first Fight for Freedom failed and the Harvests have long since begun, but something is soon to change the stagnant water into a rushing river...
